This qualification provides learners who have an interest, prior knowledge and experience in retail with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the different aspects of working in the retail sector. The focus on development of skills and knowledge to an advanced level will prepare learners for progression onto a range of higher education courses within the Retail and Commercial Enterprise or associated sectors. Learners will develop the knowledge needed to understand work in the retail sector including selling, service, team working, health and safety, dealing with theft and product knowledge. The optional units give learners the opportunity to undertake learning programmes specific to their interests or aspirations within the retail sector and allow progression onto higher level qualifications within both generic and specialist areas. This qualification is a competence-based qualification which requires candidates to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required when working in the retail industry, and is ideal for those working in their first retail management role, or those who wish to progress in their retail career. Candidates must be 16 to undertake this qualification. This qualification also forms part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Retail

The role of a Retail Apprentice will depend on the retail organisation they work for. They could be helping customers to choose products, processing payments and maintaining stock levels. They can also create and maintain visual merchandising displays in order to promote products effectively. An Apprentice may work in a specialist department and become a product expert, able to help with specific queries. The overall aim of the qualification is for the apprentice to work effectively as part of the retail team and to provide a positive and seamless service. Job roles include Sales Assistant, Stockroom Assistant, Visual Merchandiser and Fresh Food Counter Assistant.
